What is the Best of 5 Rule in CBSE Class 10?

The Best of 5 rule means that when calculating your overall percentage or aggregate marks, only your top 5 scoring subjects are considered—even if you appeared for 6 or more subjects.

This rule is especially helpful for students who take an additional subject like IT, Home Science, or a third language. If you score lower in one subject, it won’t affect your overall percentage—as long as your other 5 subjects have better scores.

How Does It Work?

Let’s say you appeared for 6 subjects:

  • English – 85
  • Hindi – 80
  • Maths – 95
  • Science – 90
  • Social Science – 88
  • IT – 70

👉 Your top 5 scores are: Maths, Science, Social Science, English, Hindi

IT (lowest score) is excluded from percentage calculation.

So your percentage = (85 + 80 + 95 + 90 + 88) / 5 = 87.6%

Why Is This Rule Important?

  • Reduces stress for students who struggle in one subject
  • Improves overall percentage for college admissions
  • Encourages subject exploration without fear of marks loss
  • Protects your aggregate if one paper didn’t go well

CBSE’s Official Stand

CBSE does not officially declare percentages on marksheets. However, for admissions or job applications, institutions may calculate your percentage using the Best of 5 rule.
